Claiming to be self-taught, Oughton’s art education began at his illustrator father’s elbow and continued with years of study of the works of Ditko, Kelly and Herriman. Formal training commenced in high school where his patient art teacher was foiled by Oughton’s lack of motivation.
Subsequently accepted at a well-known Philadelphia art school, Oughton did not attend. Twenty-five years of self-employment in camera and optical repair has now dried up leaving Oughton with an appreciation of light and its effects but no income. His mid-life crisis is to either 1) find a real job or 2) take pen in hand and draw ‘til the savings run out and then find a real job.
Oughton resides in Hellam, PA with his delightful, encouraging weaver wife, one or two musically inclined step-adults and four cats.
Robert , with his wife Phyllis Koster, own and operate a gallery in Wrightsville, PA called “Weavings, Ink.” where they exhibit their own work plus 3 or more shows a year of student work and other artists.
